As a teenager I developed a great interest in insects as well as photography, art, and graphic design. Following these interests, I first studied graphic design and then worked for two years as a graphic designer in an advertising agency. I started studying biology with the intention of specialising in scientific illustration. However, during my studies I met Prof. Dr. Ragnar KinzelbachExternal link, the most prominent expert of Strepsiptera in the second half of the 20th century, who infected me with his enthusiasm for this fascinating group of insects. Since my diploma thesis in 1990, I have been working on Strepsiptera, but I have not lost my interest in photography and art.
Research Interests
I am interested in the morphology, phylogenetic systematics, and evolution of the Hexapoda. My main focus is on the phylogeny and evolution of the enigmatic twisted-winged parasites, the Strepsiptera. In my research I combine comparative morphology, embryology, post-embryonic development, palaeontology, biomechanics, and behaviour. Furthermore, I am interested in the optimal visualisation of anatomical and morphological data. I have done field work in Yemen, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Italy, and Croatia, among other places.
Research Topics
- Phylogeny and evolution of Strepsiptera
- Insect anatomy (mainly skeletomuscular system)
- Evolutionary morphology
- Insect paleontology
- Innovative techniques in insect morphology
- Reproductive and mating strategies of Strepsiptera
Research Methods
- µ-CT segmentation, 3D rendering
- Stereomicroscopy, scanning electron microscopy
- Microphotography, focus stacking
- High-speed videography
- Confocal laser scanning microscopy
- Biomechanics
- Histology
- Parsimony analyses and reconstruction of character evolution
