Master Biochemistry
Building upon their existing knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology, students in the MSc Biochemistry programme will learn advanced concepts of molecular biology and biochemistry, and will apply methodical approaches to the analysis of biomolecules and cellular functions on molecular levels within a broad range of scientific fields.
The programme is coordinated by the Center for Molecular Biomedicine (CMB) in Jena, and involves contributions from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU), the Jena University Hospital (UKJ), the Fritz Lipman Institute on Aging (FLI), the Hans Knöll Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (HKI), and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Biology (MPICE). All of these institutions are located on the primary science campus in Jena, the "Beutenberg Campus".
In three mandatory basic modules in the first semester, students learn about i) Modern techniques in spectroscopy and bioimaging, ii) Regulatory aspects of biochemistry, and ii) Cell biology. In the second semester students can chose amoung a wide selection of specicalization modules (see Curriculum). The second year of the programme is completely dedicated to practical work, to learn techniques and plan projects, as well as to doing a Master's thesis in a lab of choice in Jena with the ultimate aim to get you ready for an academic carreer or an interesting job in industry or administration.
