I am fascinated by the diversity and interactions of microorganisms and how they influence our lives on all scales. Key ecological players are protists, that make up a large proportion of eukaryotic diversity. In my research, I focus on the elucidation of the understanding of the microbial food web in groundwater. Therefore, I want to characterize the role of protists in oligotrophic groundwater food webs from different groundwater sources and develop a novel approach, combining optical (MIFC) and molecular high-throughput methods to accurately quantify specific protistan lineages as well as provide quantitative insights into consumption rates of bacterial prey.
