Contents

This lecture covers the basic concepts and specialized knowledge in Immuno- and Infection Biology. The role of both innate immunity in recognition and clearance of infectious microbes and of modified self-particles will be discussed. In addition to clearance, the role of the adaptive immune system will be covered. Central immunobiological effector systems and mechanism will be covered and the role of immune effector cells and also immune regulatory networks will be presented.

The seminar will cover timely scientific articles to the field discussed in the lecture series. Selected articles will be summarized and the topics will be discussed by all members of the group.

The practical class will include basic techniques in immunobiology and infection biology, such as the detection of antigens with various immunobiological methods. Also hemolytic and cell-damaging assays, protein-protein interaction und cell cultivation. Tests will include flow cytometry and mircrobial techniques.

Learning and qualification objectives

Gain insight into the basics of immuno- and infection biology, as well as methods in immunobiology. Apply modern analytical methods.
